So, you got the class, ah?

Two years back, I would have never imagined that I would make the following statement . My roommate was asking me If I want to go for a new Diwali release tamil movie. My immediate reply was "No! Sorry! I would like be at home and catch up the 8:00PM movie at TCM-Turner Classic Movies".

The movie that TCM broadcast yesterday was a French movie (with English subtitles) "The battle of Algiers". The movie was produced by one of the Algerian freedom activists and an Italian production company. It shows the terrorist and armed insurgence/Guerrilla activities of the FLN and how the french army crushes those activities. The movie doesn't have a solid background story, but it is just based on theme of the Algiers war. The screenplay and the way the movie was taken is excellent.

Nowadays, I don't look at the TV guide to see what movie is being played in TCM. I just make sure that I am there at 8:00 PM before the TV, watching the channel. They always show the classic movies of all time. I still remember the "Taxi Driver" movie (one of the first classic movies that I watched, during the beginning of this year). I was so impressed with the movie and Robert De Niro's acting. Cannot forget the angry look on DeNiro's face in the last scene of the movie, when he looks at the "low moral" crowd in the New York streets. (The next day I wanted to get as slim as De Niro in that movie and started jogging!).

Till date I have watched a lot of great movies in that channel. Recent ones being "Mr. Holland's Opus", "Bridge on river Kwai", "A matter of life and death", "The African queen", "A bucket of blood", "Elmer Gantry".... The best part is there are no commercials! and these movies make your ass stick to the seat for the whole duration of the movie!

I was speaking to Narasimha about the movies in TCM and how I would hate to watch a current desi/tamil film or even a recent hollywood film, he sarcastically responded "So, you got the class, ah?". I don't know! I once thought that "My fair lady"/"Ben Hur"/"Bridge on River Kwai"/"Lawrence of Arabia" kind of movies were boring movies and wondered how people could enjoy it? But now, I can only watch such great old movies and very few new (good) movies! Any other movie leaves me wanting for more [good movies]!!
